Two firms have been hired for the first phase of engineering needed to reconstruct the Kimball Street and Chicago Street bridges in downtown Elgin. A $1.2 million contract with Alfred Benesch and Co. for the Kimball work and a $736,000 contract with TranSystems Corp. for the Chicago project were approved Wednesday by the Elgin City Council — 'the first step in a pretty long journey to get the (bridges rebuilt),' Public Works Director Mike Pubentz said. If all goes according to plan, Kimball Street bridge construction could begin in 2026 followed by the Chicago Street bridge two years later, Pubentz said.
